Is Dermaplane Right For Me?

The Maryland Board of Cosmetology has approved the use of the dermaplane modality for estheticians that do not work under a doctor. Dermaplaning is a physical exfoliation procedure. It requires the use of a sterile, surgical scalpel to gently "shave" the skin's surface, removing the top-most layer of dead skin along with fine, vellus hair. This does not cause the hair to grow back thicker and darker.

Dermaplaning is recommended for all skin types except those with acneic skin. If you have deep cystic acne, wait until breakouts are clear before trying this treatment. As always, also discuss any allergies or skin sensitivities before starting a treatment.  This is a great treatment if you are pregnant or breastfeeding and want exfoliation without the risk of chemicals.

What are the benefits of Dermaplaning?

  • Provides deeper product penetration.

  • Removes soft facial hair that traps dirt and oils.

  • Promotes smoother skin.

  • Safe procedure for removing dead skin cells and “peach fuzz”

  • Reduces the appearance of acne scars.

  • Diminishes the look of fine lines.

  • Works well on all skin types.

Not ideal for:

  • Those with an active cold sore.

  • If you have used Accutane/Isotretinoin (acne medication) within the last 12 months.

  • If you have recently had skin procedures including fillers or chemicals peels - wait two weeks before having the treatment.

  • Botox - wait one week before having the treatment.

  • Do not wax 3 days before treatment.

  • Avoid sun tanning or tanning spray tans for at least one week before treatment.

Dermaplaning can be added to any of our facials or a stand alone facial. It is a quick, effective procedure and no down town is required. It is a painless procedure and can be compared to the sensation of shaving your legs, but in this case, it’s on your face. Each time the treatment is carried out around 2-3 weeks work of dead skin cells are removed. It is recommended that you space treatments approximately four weeks apart for the best results.
